The KCB Rwanda Mountain Gorillas Rally got under way from Kigali’s Amahoro Stadium at around 3pm today. A contact suggested I pop along to the stadium to see the cars off. I did. And I took a few photos, three of which I’ve added here. I know nothing about rallying… least of all the African rally circuit, but apparently,
The KCB Rwandan Mountain Gorilla Rally is the fourth round of the 2010 FIA African Rally Championship and takes place from Friday 4th June to Sunday 6th June. link
The drivers came from all over East Africa and, surprisingly, drove some old classic cars, such as the Ford Escort, Ford Mustang and Datsun 260Z pictured here. Not the kind of cars you see driving at diagonals over the humps in Kigali every day.

Two people were killed and 14 others injured in Rwanda when a car ploughed into a crowd of spectators at a rally. A Kenyan driver reportedly lost control of his car as he raced at high speed on Sunday night. Two of those injured are said to be in a serious condition. The KCB Mountain Gorilla Rally held in the eastern district of Gatsibo was organised to celebrate World Environment Day. link

The Wladoil/Bellotto Africa Rally Team experienced mixed results on last weekends KCB Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally when lead driver Lee Rose led the rally outright before succumbing to mechanical gremlins. However fellow Mitsubishi driver Gianluca Ciaraldi finished 16th overall and Historic Escort driver John Rose finished third in the classic section. link
